Nest‐site selection by cinnamon teal and other ground‐nesting ducks in Great Salt Lake wetlands

چکیده
Ground-nesting ducks can reduce nest depredation by selecting sites where local physical structures or vegetation provide olfactory visual concealment. We evaluated nest-site selection comparing duck nests to random during 2019 and 2020 in the impounded wetlands of Great Salt Lake (GSL), Utah, USA. During wet springs, most are underwater, leaving only dams available as nesting substrate. located 399 cinnamon teal (Spatula cyanoptera), 137 mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), 162 gadwalls (Mareca strepera) on dams. At sites, we measured overhead concealment, lateral average height patch, standard deviation tallest within 1 m nest, dam width, distance from road along center dam. found that did not select for any these characteristics. Cinnamon selected had more also mixed evidence were wider. All species favored heterogeneous patches over homogenous ones. Duck a clumped distribution contained colonies American avocets (Recurvirostra americana), black-necked stilts (Himantopus mexicanus), common terns (Sterna hirundo), with inside colonies, but showed other wetlands. Prior 1980, approximately half world's population nested GSL wetlands, since time has declined greatly. Given this decline, management actions should be conducted will improve cover widen dikes species' habitat.

Specimen Shrinkage in Cinnamon Teal
—Body size measurements from freshly collected birds and dried museum specimens were used to evaluate specimen shrinkage in Cinnamon Teal (Anas cyanoptera). Six of seven body measurements of female Cinnamon Teal differed significantly after specimen drying, whereas five of seven male body measurements differed. The largest amount of shrinkage was in bill height, bill width, and tarsus length. B...

متن کاملSoils of Great Salt Lake Wetlands: Hydric Indicators and Common Features
Soil is much more than just dirt. Often called the “living skin of the planet Earth,” soil is a mixture of organic and mineral material, air, and water that is critical for the support of life [1]. Soil provides structure for plant roots, retains water to ensure plants have access long after it rains, and holds nutrients so they are available to organisms over time [1]. Soil is not material dev...

متن کاملNutrient Recycling by Eared Grebes in the Great Salt Lake
—Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling in lakes can be impacted by numerous abiotic and biotic factors. Large animals, such as birds and mammals, may recycle nutrients within a system or bring them in from surrounding habitats or different landscapes. Eared Grebes (Podiceps nigricollis) congregate in large numbers in the fall on the Great Salt Lake (GSL), Utah, and may have an important role ...
